MONTCLAIR, N.J., July 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- New Special Interest Sessions to be offered at PAINWeek 2018 will cover topics of interest with respect to opioid prescribing that are of critical concern to practitioners today. Year of the Locusts will discuss the development, impact, and unintended consequences of CDC guidelines on practitioners and patients with chronic noncancer and cancer pain. Pain Management at Ground Zero will examine West Virginia's response to the epidemic of opioid overdose, a category in which the state has led the nation. The Other Opioid Crisis: Heroin and Fentanyl will investigate the roles and statistics of both prescription and illicit opioids—namely heroin and fentanyl—in today's "opioid overdose epidemic." This course will be presented by PAINWeek senior faculty member Kevin Zacharoff, MD, FACIP, FACPE, FAAP, on Wednesday, September 5. The escalation in opioid related overdose fatalities has prompted intense reaction as stakeholders move to diminish their prescription for patients with acute and chronic pain. Of this trend, Dr. Zacharoff observed: "Unfortunately, there may be a lack of focus regarding the true definition and characterization of the opioid epidemic. There may also be a rush to judgment about the role of appropriately prescribed opioid analgesics in the addiction crisis we face today."

PAINWeek 2018 will feature a diverse curriculum in the following course concentrations: acute pain management, advanced practice practitioners, behavioral, integrative, and interventional pain management, chronic pain syndromes, medical/legal issues, neurology, pain and chemical dependency, physical therapy, palliative care, and pharmacotherapy. There will also be full-day programs presented by the American Headache Society, the American Pain Society, the American Society of Pain Educators, and the International Pelvic Pain Society.

Practicing healthcare professionals can register to attend for the discounted price of $799 until July 31. To learn more about PAINWeek 2018, and register for the conference, click here or visit https://www.painweek.org/painweek.html.
